Tips for Students to Protect Themselves and Their Living Spaces
As students prepare for finals week and head back home for winter break, American Campus Communities held safety events across the country. ACC partnered with The University of Texas at Austin Police Department (UTPD) to share these general safety tips for students at off campus housing.
General Safety Tips
-
Keep belongings out of sight when you park your car
-
Use a two-lock system when securing your bicycle on campus
-
Don’t walk home alone
-
Avoid sleeping in public areas
These additional safety reminders serve as an easy go-to checklist that can be used to protect yourself and your living spaces during the holiday season and beyond.
Run through a simple checklist before leaving for winter break:
-
Unplug all items to conserve energy: coffee pots, toasters, blenders, clocks, TVs, extension cords etc.
-
Make sure the stovetop and oven are turned off
-
Turn off all lights
-
Lock all windows and doors
-
Do not leave the heater on
