American Campus Communities Presented with Four Innovator Awards at Annual Student Housing Business Interface Conference

April 18, 2023 -- AUSTIN, Texas. — American Campus Communities, the nation’s largest student housing company, earns 4 award categories of Student Housing Business Magazine’s InterFace Conference Innovator Awards as a top leader in the industry.

The following on-campus awards were presented to ACC for 2023:

  • On-Campus Best Use of Green & Sustainable Construction/Development: 55H. St., Georgetown University 55 H St. is a 222,000-sq-foot community, complete with 4,200 sq-feet of ground floor common area spaces. With an efficient project design maximizing density on a compact three-quarter-acre site, the project takes advantage of its proximity to public transit with a reduced parking footprint. The minimal parking offered on site includes an electric charging station and priority parking for carpool and green vehicles. The building envelope is designed as one component of a holistic model whose performance criteria are set to reduce annual energy consumption, water use and the use of other natural resources. The thermally efficient building envelope, green roof, exterior glazing and solar shading provide energy savings by reducing solar heat gain and mitigating the heat island effect of its downtown location. Solar panel arrays on the roof and the south façade provide energy for heating water, and a bioretention system is included in the courtyard for stormwater management.
  • On-Campus Best Implementation of Mixed-Use/Live-Learn: Disney’s Flamingo Crossings Village and Apprentice Hall were designed to celebrate the experience and history of Walt Disney World and meet the residential needs of the Disney College Internship Program. Unlike any other project in the country in terms of scope and scale, this 154 acre site includes an East and West Parcel which divides the community into two but connects to the Disney bus system for transportation into the park. In total there are 2,614 units serving 10,440 beds and 48 buildings. Each Parcel has a Community Center, with the East totaling 26,572 square feet and the West totaling 26,572 square feet for residents to call home. Vibrant color palettes, classic Disney character murals and unique artwork highlighting Disney landmarks brighten the community and create a lively, inviting environment on the Flamingo Crossings Village campus.
  • On-Campus Best New Development: University of California, Riverside, North District: Home to more than 1,500 UCR students, the project features a mix of affordable one, two and four-bedroom units, accommodating a variety of students with diverse economic profiles. The new community’s pricing remains consistent with similar, older on-campus accommodations and is designed to support student success, featuring ample academic space for group and private study, resources for academic achievement, three seminar classrooms and direct access to university facilities. Additionally, the community includes an 18,600-square-foot community center with student lounge and social space, community kitchen and study space, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center, arcade room, soundproof music practice rooms, laundry facilities and outdoor terraces offering scenic views of the beautiful UCR campus.
  • On-Campus Best Architecture: 55H. St., Georgetown University Providing space for approximately 476 Georgetown students, the 158-unit project features 11 floors of residential space with the ground floor of common area space designed to encourage a live-learn balance and support academic success with both retail and academic space. The lobby, located on the ground floor, offers a variety of group study rooms as well as a game room. Right off the lobby are two outdoor courtyards paired with electric grills and a communal space. Each residential floor fosters an academic environment, featuring ample academic spaces for group and private study. Creating a sense of community, every floor offers a common area kitchen for residents to come together and get to know their neighbors.

The Innovator Awards are given to student housing owners, developers, operators, architecture firms and universities for excellence in student housing development, marketing and operations. Over 100  industry experts judged on more than 150 entries in this year’s contest.

American Campus Communities goes above and beyond to develop residential communities, serving universities across the country, that help students thrive both academically and personally,” said Rob Palleschi, CEO at American Campus Communities. “Our team members work hard to put students first and we are extremely honored to see them receive the recognition they deserve once again.

Since 2013, ACC has been awarded 52 SHB Innovator Awards. This year’s conference and award ceremony were held on Wednesday, April 5 at the JW Marriott in Austin, Texas.
